Hiraizumi enters history in the twelfth century. For about a hundred years, the Fujiwara Clan flourished over three generations. This prosperity was preserved by Hiraizumi’s strategic position with access to both land and water transport via the Okuōdō road and Kitakami river, rich gold yields, and trade between the north and the south. The spirit of Hiraizumi culture was rooted in Jōdo ideology, which idealizes the peaceful, pure world where Buddha lives. The Jōdo (“Pure Land”) ideology holds that the soul of everyone killed in battle will be comforted without discrimination, thus bringing the “Pure Land” to this world. The heritage of Hiraizumi’s culture is composed of Chūsonji Temple, Mōtsuji Temple, the remains of Kanjizaiō Palace, the remains of Muryōkōin Temple, and Mount Kinkei. Only remains are left of these sites of heritage, aside from Chūsonji Temple and Mōtsuji Temple.
